THOUGHTS ON COMPETITION
Competition is inherently egoic and the most distilled form of comparison. It’s said it brings out the best in people. It certainly does motivate people to strive, but I believe people are at their best when inspired to come together and work toward something meaningful, something they believe in. On the other hand, I would say competition does bring out the worst in people. The need to be on the top of the heap (because there is but one winner with any worth) inherently tears others down for the sole purpose of paving the way to our own, private ascension. Jesus defied this norm, as well as all masculine categorizations of his day. He was meek, gentle, and mild. Of all the things God could have been, he was a man with a feminine soul. This is tough for men of all ages, even modern man, to deal with because it forces us to challenge many of the things society says we should be, which unearths insecurities within the constructs of our very identities.
